  • The expansion of TSRI's mass spectrometry lab has kept pace with advances in the field itself. As new techniques have been developed, the institute has found itself on the cutting edge with instruments capable of performing measurements with high sensitivity and a mass range of up to 200,000 Da. With these capabilities, the lab can now routinely analyze compounds such as oligonucleotides, carbohydrates, peptides, proteins, drugs, and a variety of small biomolecules.

    The instruments that allow for these analyses include a high resolution FTMS mass spectrometer and an Agilent LC ESI-TOF, an ESI triple quadrupole, multiple ESI single quadrupole and ESI ion traps as well as MALDI TOF-reflectron mass spectrometers.

  • Biological Mass Spectrometry

    Our laboratory is involved in the development of new mass spectrometry based technologies and their application to metabolomics. Efforts in our lab have been directed towards making improvements in critical areas such as sensitivity, specificity and dynamic range for the measurement of small molecule metabolites in biological fluids. Since metabolomics can lead to the structural identification of small molecules that are differentially regulated, it can be correlated with gene expression data to illuminate the regulation of an entire biochemical pathway. Metabolites are the end-result of a biological pathway and therefore offer the most direct and meaningful biomarker measurements for a specific phenotype. We are applying the mass based metabolomics approaches developed in our laboratory to the investigation of processes involved in stem cell differentiation, the gut microbial community, neuropathic pain, and the immune response.
